Lolita's Care

Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to stop performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also want her relocated to an open-water pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, marine biologists believed that Lolita might have a similar fate. Sadly, she did not get the chance to go back to the sea.

Lolita's captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her in danger. They harm her health by making her perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. They also place her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as an ancestor, on a plan that would eventually take her to open waters. The plan would have included a sanctuary on Washington's west coast where she could live for the rest of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the ocean itself not a concrete tank.

If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for the past 40 years. Activists from across the country have called for Lolita's release from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild.
